Mens Long hair – Introduction, discover various Mens long hair
styles
Throughout history, men have worn long hair. It has been a symbol of
tradition in some cultures and a denotation of wealth in other cultures.
Many times it has been a visible expression of separation from society.
Some have viewed long hair on a man with negative connotations. They
believe that he is less disciplined or lacks control over himself.
Luckily, most of those with such narrow opinions are not the majority.
Long hair is a choice that is personal. It may reflect a man’s
lifestyle, religious beliefs or be part of his tradition or customs.
Hair is an important way to present yourself to society. It also is
utilized as a tool by which to judge others. Some traditionalists
believe that women, not men, should wear long hair. One of the earliest
mentioning of a man with long hair, the Old Testament told the story of
Samson. Sampson’s strength was in direct correlation with his hair
length. If he cut his hair, his physical strength was taken away. In
ancient Greece, salves had shaven head while the wealthy and powerful
had long hair. The gods that were beloved during that classical period
wore their hair long. This includes Zeus, Hector, Achilles and Poseidon.
Length of hair was also used to distinguish classes in Europe during the
Middle Ages. The peasants and servants wore their hair short; this was
to signal their station in life. In contrast, the Germanic Goth and
Merovingians wore their hair long and flowing. Long hair was also seen
as a rebellious act. English colonists who moved to Ireland adapted
quickly to the Irish custom of wearing this hair long. This was seen as
a betrayal to England, where men wore their hair short.
In particular, hair length in England and the attached meaning has
fluctuated greatly. The 11th and 12th century in England saw an increase
in longer hair by men. This was precipitated by monarchs who wore their
hair long as a sign of their nobility. During the English Civil War
period (1642 – 1651), the two opposing sides even could not agree about
the length of hair for men. The Cavaliers, considered to be less
religious of the two groups, wore longer hair. The Roundheads wore short
hair and were religiously devout.
Other countries and ethnic groups have also embraced men wearing
their hair long. Men throughout Africa, Japan, China and the Americas
either wore their hair long or braided. In Asia, long hair reflected a
status of nobility. In Africa, long hair classified men as warriors. The
Native Americans wore braids adorned with feathers. The hippie movement
of the 1960s saw the reemergence of long hair. It was a rebellion
against what was nicknamed “the establishment.” Music has even
influenced the length of men’s hair. Jamaican reggae musician Bob Marley
introduced the world to dreadlocks. The rock bands of the 1970s and
1980s featured singers and musicians that all sported long hair. Heavy
metal bands continue the legacy of long hair among musicians today.
